Introduction to Robotics

History of Robotics

The term "robot" was first used in a 1920 play called "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots) by Czech writer Karel Čapek. The word "robot" comes from the Czech word "robota," meaning forced labor or drudgery.

Modern robotics began in the mid-20th century with the advent of programmable machines. The first digitally operated and programmable robot was invented by George Devol in 1954 and was ultimately called the Unimate.
